A Brief History of Eastern Missouri Family YMCA
In 2011, Mayor Ramon Barnes formed a mayoral committee to investigate the feasibility of a facility to house a new library and a YMCA in Vandalia. After the committee toured statewide recreation centers, YMCAs, and libraries and gathered information, the group contacted the Y of the USA and Sherry Medley with the Mexico Area Family YMCA to open discussions with community members about membership and financial support for a YMCA. The Vandalia Recreation Corporation (VRC) was reorganized to take the lead in the YMCA project. With the initial support of the Rual Morris Foundation, a USDA loan, the City of Vandalia, and the Mexico Area Family YMCA as the home office, an architect and contractor were hired to bring the floor plans to reality. The 18000 square foot facility would be home to a full-size gymnasium, Wellness Center, Child Watch area, two fitness classrooms, full-size kitchen, and Y Café.
For the next six years, funds were raised under the guidance of the VRC and Felicity Goodpasture-Culwell who served as president of the VRC. Groundbreaking for the new Eastern Missouri Family YMCA was held on November 2, 2017. A membership drive was held the first week of February 2019 followed by a donor reception on February 8, 2019. The Eastern Missouri Family YMCA opened on Monday, February 11, 2019, at its current location, 309 South Main, Vandalia.
